TIPS FOR TREATING YOUR HORSE WITH OMEPRAZOLE AND SUCRALFATE

FEEDING ABSUCRALFATE:

Ideally AbSucralfate should be given two or three times a day, either 30 minutes before or two hours after meals or medication. While treatment three times per day is ideal, for some this is not feasible; treatment twice a day will still be effective.

AbSucralfate should not be given at the same time as other medications, as it is known to limit their effectiveness.

AbSucralfate in granule form may be administered with water as it is not enteric coated.

AbSucralfate can be fed with a handful of chaff or a small feed if your horse is particularly picky.

AbSucralfate is most effective when the horses stomach is at its emptiest (typically in the morning).

It is very important that AbSucralfate is not administered at the same time as other medication or supplements; ideally it is best to allow for 30 minutes between feeding the granules and offering other feed or treatment.

Ideas for feeding AbSucralfate granules include:

FEEDING ABPRAZOLE:

ONE sachet, scoop or tablet per 175kg (385lbs), administered as a single dose per day for 28 days. ONE syringe per 550kg (1210lbs), administered as a single dose per day for 28 days. Prevention Regime ONE sachet, scoop or tablet per 350kg (770lbs), administered as a single dose ongoing. ONE syringe per 550kg (1210lbs), administered as a single dose per day, ongoing.

Omeprazole in granule form is typically the easiest to administer.

It is important to remember that the granules should not be exposed to water as this will damage their enteric coating, though granules may be top dressed to feed dampened with a substance like molasses.

As molasses does not damage omeprazole's enteric coating, it is possible to prepare dampened feed in advance.

How to get your Horse to eat the granules:

The best way to get your horse to eat the granules:

1. Feed them in a handful of dry chop with a spoonful of oil, molasses or other sticky substance.

2. Take the core out of an apple or carrot and pour the granules in.

3. Put the granules inside a slice of bread. Fold over the bread and squeeze together.

4. Put the granules in a large syringe with a small amount of oil and squeeze the syringe into the horse's mouth

5. Put a blob of molasses on a spoon and stick the granules to it The scrap the spoon on your horses tongue depositing the granules and molasses.

****Remember they Omeprazole Granules must stay dry but the Sucralfate Granules can be dissolved or got wet if you require****

Weaning off the treatment:

Once your horse has completed it's treatment phase it is best to reduce their dosage gradually. (Reduction by one sachet per day less per week would be recommend.) Some horse can be completely taken off medication. In some cases if the reason the horse developed ulcers has not been completely addressed it maybe necessary to continue with a lower dose for maintenance purposes.
